Whisky Investment UK: A Commitment to Sustainability and Quality
Whisky Investment UK was established through its parent company, Silvercrest, which has an established track record of working alongside breweries, distilleries, and bonded warehouses to support improvements in energy efficiency and reduce reliance on fossil fuels across their operations. Building on this foundation, Whisky Investment UK offers clients access to cask whisky from selected partner distilleries and storage providers. Cask whisky has historically been a long-term, illiquid asset class and should be considered as part of a broader diversified investment approach. Our selection criteria are intentionally rigorous. We seek to work with distilleries that demonstrate a commitment to responsible production practices, as well as storage partners operating in regulated bonded warehouse environments that meet appropriate standards of security and oversight. Sustainability is an important consideration in our due diligence process, alongside quality and provenance. We are encouraged by continued progress within the wider industry, including initiatives from producers such as Glenturret Distillery, which reflects a growing focus on more sustainable approaches to whisky production. As with all alternative investments, capital is at risk, and the value of investments can go down as well as up. Cask whisky is an illiquid asset and may not be readily realisable. |
Glenturret’s Transition Toward Sustainable Production
Glenturret Distillery, one of Scotland’s oldest working distilleries, has announced plans to phase out the use of peat in its whisky production as part of its long-term sustainability strategy. The transition is expected to be completed by 2025, with the aim of removing peated expressions from its core range by 2026. Historically known for its unpeated style, Glenturret introduced its peated expression, Ruadh Maor, in 2009, expanding the breadth of its portfolio. The decision to gradually withdraw peated releases reflects a strategic shift towards a more consistent house style, with a focus on balancing product quality, consistency, and environmental considerations. According to Glenturret’s Distillery Director, Ian Renwick:
This direction reflects a broader industry trend towards more sustainable production practices and responsible resource use. Whisky Investment UK monitors such developments as part of its due diligence when engaging with partner distilleries. |
Commitment to Responsible Whisky Production
Glenturret Distillery has implemented a range of sustainability initiatives to improve operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact throughout its production processes. These include reported reductions in annual energy consumption of approximately 27%, a decrease in process waste of approximately 1,000 tonnes per year, and water savings of approximately 1,000,000 litres per year.
Distillery leadership has emphasised a continued focus on responsible production, with Distillery Director Ian Renwick noting:
“As responsible distillers, we seek out not only the best materials but also the most considered practices when crafting our whiskies.”
Whisky Investment UK recognises and supports industry-wide efforts to improve sustainability and operational standards across whisky production. The availability of cask whisky from established distilleries such as Glenturret forms part of our broader approach to sourcing from reputable partners, subject to availability and due diligence.
